External Wall Insulation (EWI) Across Ireland
Solid-wall, stone and hollow-block homes have no cavity to fill. External wall insulation wraps the outside of the building in an insulating layer and finishes it with render — the single most effective fabric upgrade available.

How external wall insulation works
Insulation board is mechanically fixed and bonded to the outside face of the wall, reinforced with mesh and basecoat, then finished with a through-coloured render. Window and door reveals are insulated, sills are extended, and rainwater goods are refitted clear of the new surface.
Because the insulation sits outside the structure, it removes cold bridging at corners, reveals and floor junctions — the places where internal systems typically leave weak points.
What it does to the house
EWI keeps the wall itself warm, which moves the dew point outside the structure and stops the surface condensation that causes mould on internal wall corners. It also gives the exterior a completely new finish, so it is often done when a house needs re-rendering anyway.
The trade-off is scale: it is scaffolded external work, takes longer than a cavity fill, and changes the external appearance — so it needs planning consideration on some properties.
Is your home suitable?
- Solid, stone or hollow-block construction with no usable cavity
- Built and occupied before 2011
- Space to erect scaffolding around the elevations being treated
- No unresolved structural or rising damp issues
Common questions
How long does external wall insulation take?
Typically two to four weeks depending on the size of the house and the weather, since render needs suitable conditions to cure.
Will external wall insulation change how my house looks?
Yes — the walls become slightly thicker and the finish is new render. Many homeowners see this as a benefit, but it is worth considering if your property is in a protected area.
Can I insulate only some walls?
Yes, though whole-house treatment performs best. Partial treatment is sometimes used where one exposed elevation causes most of the problem.
