Attic & Roof Insulation Across Ireland

A house loses roughly a quarter of its heat straight up through an uninsulated roof. Attic insulation is the cheapest energy upgrade available and the one that pays for itself fastest — often within two winters.

SEAI grants up to €2,000 for attic insulation (up to €2,500 for first-time buyers and homeowners on qualifying welfare payments).

How attic insulation works

The standard approach lays mineral wool over and between the ceiling joists, building the total depth up to current building-regulation levels. Most Irish homes built before 2011 have either nothing at all or a thin, compressed layer that stopped performing years ago.

We also insulate the attic hatch, lag the pipework and the water tank, and keep the ventilation paths clear at the eaves — that last part matters, because sealing an attic without airflow is how you create a condensation problem.

Converted attics and pitched roofs

Where the attic has been converted into a room, or the ceiling follows the line of the roof, insulation goes in at rafter level instead — between and under the rafters. It keeps the room warm without eating much head height. Dormer cheeks and flat roof sections on extensions are handled separately depending on construction.

Is your home suitable?

  • Built and occupied before 2011 (SEAI grant requirement)
  • Safe access to the roof space
  • No previous SEAI attic insulation grant on the property
  • Existing insulation under current depth, or none at all

We confirm all of this at the measuring visit and tell you what depth you already have before you commit to anything.

Common questions

How much does attic insulation cost in Ireland?

Cost depends on the attic area and how much existing material has to be removed. SEAI estimates the grant now covers roughly 80% of the typical cost, so the net figure for many homes is modest. We give you a written quote after the measuring visit.

How long does attic insulation take?

Most attics are completed in a single day. Converted attics with rafter-level work take longer, usually two to three days.

Will attic insulation improve my BER rating?

Yes. Roof insulation is one of the measures that moves a BER rating most for the money spent, and it is normally the first step we recommend before wall or window work.
